PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a can forming apparatus where a driving mechanism for a punch is simply composed, thus a can can be formed at high precision for a long time, and further, productive efficiency is high, and to provide a method for forming a can. SOLUTION: In the can forming apparatus 10 where the edge part of a shank part 11 performing a reciprocating linear motion is provided with a punch 13, further, a cylindrical die 24 is arranged coaxially with the punch 13, the punch 13 is attached/detached to/from the inner circumferential hole 24A of the die 24, thus a cap material W arranged at the die 24 is subjected to deep drawing or ironing, so as to form a can body C, the shank part 11 is driven and made to perform a reciprocating linear motion by a linear motor 17.
