<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the such problem associated with sealed electric compressors having a compressing mechanism with a capacity varying mechanism and an induction motor for driving it that, when the capacity is varied, load torque is substantially reduced and the motor is operated at a load point off its optimum point, and as a result, the coefficient of performance of the compressor is significantly degraded. <P>SOLUTION: All or part of the main windings 9 of the induction motor 7 is changed in conjunction with switching of the capacity variable compressing mechanism.
