PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus or the like capable of developing the highest productivity in matching with a processing capacity or the like of an output destination by avoiding originals from being stopped to the utmost extent. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus including an automatic document feeder (ADF) with: paper feed means (a paper feed clutch 70 and a paper feed motor 71 or the like) for separating originals one by one from an original bundle comprising a plurality of loading originals and feeding the originals; and carrying means (a carrier sensor 64 and a carrier motor 72 or the like) for carrying the originals fed from the paper feed means, wherein the originals are continuously fed, carried and read without stopping the originals in the automatic document feeder, is characterized to include a control means (CPU 81) for varying an interval among original paper sheets continuously fed and carried by the automatic document feeder.
