PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device, capable of reducing power consumption of a backlight system by turning off a light emission area of a backlight, corresponding to a no-picture area and adjusting luminance of the light emission area of the backlight corresponding to a picture area and not corresponding to the no-picture area. SOLUTION: A no-picture signal detection part 14 detects whether a no-picture signal with no video is added to the upper and the lower parts of a picture based on the picture signal, and discriminates the no-picture area with no picture, from among the display area of a liquid crystal panel 16. Light sources, corresponding to the no-picture area from among a plurality of light sources 18a constituting a backlight device 18, are turned off, and the luminances of the light sources that do not correspond to the no-picture area is adjusted so as to be lowered. Accordingly, power consumption is reduced by turning off the light sources of the no-picture area having no need to emit light, and the luminance of the light sources not corresponding to the no-picture area is lowered, thereby reducing the power consumption of these light sources.
