PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection cable and a position detector with it which can accurately detect the position of an object to be detected which is displaced along a complex route by a low-cost structure. SOLUTION: The position detector 100 comprises the detection cable 10 into which a magnetostrictive line 1 is inserted, a strain detection section 30 which is provided at one end of the detection cable 10, elastic bodies 74, 84 which are provided both ends of the detection cable 10, respectively, fixed members 72, 84, cases 70, 80, wires 60, 62, 64, and a permanent magnet 20. The detection cable 10 includes the magnetostrictive line 1, a non-magnetic, insulating cover 50 which surrounds the periphery of the magnetostrictive line 1, a peripheral electric conductor 52 which covers the cover 50, and an insulating protective film 54 which is provided outermost to cover the peripheral electric conductor 52. The cover 50 is interposed between the magnetostrictive line 1 and the peripheral electric conductor 52 and is provided slidably with respect to the magnetostrictive line 1.
