PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally control the floating amount of each head with respect to a recording medium. SOLUTION: A floating height control method for controlling the floating height to the recording medium, with respect to each of the plurality of the heads, having a heater detects contact of the recording medium, corresponding to each head by detection of thermal asperity and detection of a read error; decides that the heating amount of the heater in the case of detecting the contact to be in a state, where the floating amount of the head is zero; and controls the floating height of each head to be an optimal floating amount, based on the relation between the heating amount of the heater and the thermal expansion of each head.
