A variable output fuel pump for a vehicle includes a mechanical control in the drive train to vary the output of the pump independent of the pump speed. The pump motor is driven at its economic speed of the drive motor. Higher fuel demands are satisfied via the mechanical control which can be an epicyclic gearing and/or a mechanical addition to the pumping element (1, 2). The latter is connected the pumping element by a friction clutch element (5 to 8).
