PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acrylic fiber thread for carbon fiber production having little single fiber damage by restricting the shrinkage in drying stage to stabilize the yarn guide of a traveling thread and decreasing the adhesion of single fibers. SOLUTION: An acrylic fiber thread is produced by spinning a spinning dope containing an acrylic polymer and a solvent, desolvating by washing with water and drying the desolvated thread until the water content becomes essentially 0% while applying shrinkage of 0-3% when the water content of the thread is within the range of 100-140 wt.% and applying shrinkage of 0-2% when the water content is within the range of 50-100 wt.% provided that the shrinkage of the thread is controlled to 0-5% when the water content is within the range of 50-140 wt.%. In the above process, the shrinkage is adjusted in a manner to keep the decreasing ratio (%) of the thread tension in the drying stage per 1 m of the thread to 5-8% when the water content of the thread is within the range of 80-140 wt.% and to 0-2% when the water content is within the range of 0-80 wt.%.
