PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure having advantages of power saving and low heat generation by a voltage driving system and to maintain high reliability of data process without reduction of contrast of display even when the number of pixels is increased. SOLUTION: A spatial light modulator is provided with a magneto-optical layer 10 provided with a plurality of pixels whose magnetization directions can be independently set respectively and which give rotation to the polarization direction of incident light by a magneto-optical effect and a piezoelectric layer 12 provided with a plurality of stress imparting elements individually applying stress to the respective pixels by deformation. A thin film transistor circuit layer 14 wherein thin film transistors 18 are disposed for every pixel for selecting the pixels and elongating time for applying voltage to the stress imparting elements and active matrix system electric wiring lines 20 selectively driving the respective thin film transistors are formed is provided and the magneto-optical layer, the piezoelectric layer and the thin film transistor circuit layer are layered in this order.
