The present invention is a method for preventing or treating acute and ch ronic pain. Using an agent to increase the expression or activity of GLT-1, behavioral hypersensitivity is attenuated thereby preventing or treating acu te and chronic pain in a subject in need of such treatment. Methods for iden tifying agents that prevent or treat acute and chronic pain through modulati on of the expression or activity of GLT-1 or the GLT-1 pathway are also prov ided.
