A trip computer and a method for setting a system waiting status are provided to intercept power supplied to surrounding circuits in a key-off status and generate a clock pulse and not to output the clock pulse in order to be promptly operated without a system driving time while consuming the minimum current. A trip computer includes a power supply unit(60), surrounding circuits, a microcomputer(10), and a monitoring unit(50). The microcomputer receives an accessory signal and an ignition signal from the key box of a vehicle, provides power to the surrounding circuits by controlling the power supply unit if the accessory signal or the ignition signal is on in a waiting status, outputs a low signal through an inhibit port, generates a clock pulse and outputs the clock pulse through a clock port, intercepts the power supplied to the surrounding circuits by controlling the power supply unit if the accessory signal is off, outputs a high signal through the inhibit port, and intercepts the clock pulse. The monitoring unit monitors whether the microcomputer is normally operated and resets the microcomputer if the microcomputer is not normally operated.
