PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle circumference monitoring system which can extremely precisely recognize the existence of an object such as a human being even if an image of the object which is taken by an image pickup device partially disappears behind the other object such as a vehicle or the like.

SOLUTION: The vehicle circumference monitoring system 10 recognizes the presence or absence of a first object Q1in an image taken by an infrared camera 102 and the presence or absence of a second object Q2in an image area M which corresponds to a gap between the first object Q1and the ground. Actual spatial positions of the first object Q1and second object Q2are measured, and whether the second object Q2corresponds to a human being (object) P or its part is recognized depending on whether the second object Q2is at a longer distance from a vehicle 1 than the object Q1.
