PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel norbornene addition polymer having excellent solubility in a solvent based on a halogenated saturated hydrocarbon such as chloroform and dichloromethane. SOLUTION: For producing the norbornene addition polymer, instead of a conventional polymerization catalyst for a norbornene monomer, a specific catalyst is used, which is prepared by combining a compound of transition metal having a halogen atom and selected from the groups VIII, IX, and X of the Periodic Table, and a halogen-based Lewis acid not having an alkyl group. The obtained novel norbornene addition polymer has a number average molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000 when measured by the gel permeation chromatography in terms of polystyrene, and has very high solubility in a halogenated saturated hydrocarbon and contains a chloroform insoluble of 0.1% by weight or less.
