In a machine for continuously breaking a sconed slab of gum into strips and feeding the strips to a continuously operating packaging machine, a slab of gum S is yieldingly urged by a slipping conveyer along a platform 32 and over fingers 34 extending therefrom towards the bite between interdigitated toothed breaker wheels 10, 12 gear-rotated at constant speed. Here a tooth (having a small land at its peak) on the lower wheel supports the slab just behind a score line and a tooth on the upper wheel strikes the slab just ahead of a score line, the broken off stick of gum, and successive sticks being separated and carried ahead of the wheels on to and up fingers 40 extending from a discharge platform 38 by means of pushers 62 on guided chains 60. The shaft 14 of the upper wheel 10 is journalled in a frame 18 which for cleaning, repair and access can be swung upwardly about a pivot-pin, and the frame carries slab hold-down plates 41, 46 having fingers 42, 48 respectively, these fingers and the fingers 34, 40 projecting into annular grooves (Fig. 2, not shown), in the wheels 12, 10. The pitch of the teeth on each wheel is slightly less than the distance between the slab scone lines and the trailing and leading faces respectively of the upper and lower wheels, respectively, are radially disposed.</p> |
