POWER SAVING APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR LCD(LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY) BACK-LIGHT OF PORTABLE TERMINAL

A power saving apparatus and method using the LCD backlight of a portable terminal are provided to turn on/off the LCD backlight automatically during the system booting and terminating of the portable terminal and control the brightness of the LCD backlight manually even at the completion of the booting, thereby increasing the battery time of a corresponding device. A power identifying unit(200) identifies the use power of a portable terminal. A CMOS(Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor)(210) records the setting and release of a backlight off flag. A BIOS(Basic Input/Output System)(220) checks the setting and release of the recorded backlight off flag. A microprocessor controls on/off of the LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) backlight according to a signal received from the BIOS.
