<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a viewer to enjoy high-quality image data. <P>SOLUTION: When a determination section 44 determines that broadcasted image data are quasi-HD image data, where the number of pixels in image data obtained by converting a composite signal to a component signal, is up-converted to the same number of pixels as the number of pixels in an HD image; an SD image converter 48 converts SD image data down-converted by a down-converter 45 to high-quality HD image data. When it is determined that the broadcasted image data are HD image data that have not been up-converted, an HD image converter 47 uses the HD image data and the SD image data down-converted by the down-converter 45 for converting to more high-quality HD image data.
