PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a hydraulic machine capable of continuing stable operation even if frequency of power system fluctuates and runner rotation speed changes. SOLUTION: The method 10 for operating the hydraulic machine including the runner driven and rotating and a guide vane capable of adjusting opening thereof is provided with a monitor process 11 monitoring head H during operation of the hydraulic machine and runner rotation speed N, and an adjustment process 12 adjusting guide vane opening a. The adjustment process 12 sets the guide vane opening a to appropriate guide vane opening a<SB>0</SB>if relations H≥H1 and N≥N1 are satisfied when lower limit head in a high head operation range is defined as H1 and allowable lower limit of runner rotation speed is defined as N1. The adjustment process 12 sets the guide vane opening a to satisfy a relation a<SB>r</SB>≤a<a<SB>Hmax</SB>if relations H≥H1 and N<N1 are satisfied when guide vane opening making reverse flow limit head maxim is defined as a<SB>r</SB>and appropriate guide vane opening at maximum head is defined as a<SB>Hmax</SB>.
