<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a silicon nitride wear resistant member which has high strength and high toughness, and further, in particular, excellent rolling characteristic. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the silicon nitride wear resistant member is characterized by suppressing the maximum value of the width of aggregation/segregation existing in the grain boundary phase to 5 μm or less by preparing a formed body by forming a raw material mixture, obtained by adding 2-10 mass% of a rare earth element in terms of oxide, 2-7 mass% of MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>spinel, 1-7 mass% of silicon carbide, and ≤5 mass% of at least one kind selected from the group comprising Ti, Hf, Zr, W, Mo, Ta, Nb and Cr in terms of oxide, to silicon nitride powder having an average particle diameter of ≤1.0 μm and containing ≤1.5 mass% of oxygen and ≥90 mass% of α-phase type silicon nitride, and then sintering the prepared formed body at a temperature of ≤1,600°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Further, a similar action/effect can be obtained even by using a mixture of MgO and Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>in place of MgAl<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>spinel. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
