A matrix converter apparatus having both a step-up voltage output function and a step-down voltage output function. A matrix converter apparatus wherein the phases of a three-phase AC power supply (1) are directly connected to the phases of an output side by use of the bidirectional switches comprising an anti-parallel connection of IGBT transistors or the like and wherein the AC power supply voltages are subjected to a PWM voltage output control based on an output voltage instruction, thereby outputting any desired cross-flow voltages. Reactors (61,62,63) are inserted and connected between the respective phases of the three-phase AC power supply (1) and the bidirectional switches. The bidirectional switches are ON/OFF controlled such that the terminals of at least two of the reactors on the side of the bidirectional switches are short-circuited and thereafter opened, thereby boosting the output voltages of the matrix converter apparatus. At the time of switching from the short-circuit to the opening, the conduction paths of the currents having flowed in the short-circuited reactors are secured by the ON/OFF control of the group of bidirectional switches (5) and by a group of capacitors (7).
