The dispersibility of a dialdehyde polysaccharide which has been prepared by the oxidation of a polysaccharide with periodic acid is improved by treating an aqueous slurry of the dialdehyde polysaccharide with an aqueous solution of an organic or inorganic base so as to increase the pH to 4,5-6,5. The polysaccharide may be maize, wheat, tapioca, or potato starch, cellulose, dextrin, dextran, algin, or inulin. It may be up to 98% oxidized. The base may be sodium or potassium hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate, or ammonium carbonate. It may be used in a concentration of 4-8%. The temperature of treatment may be up to 25 DEG C. |
