PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel compound for use in an organic EL element. SOLUTION: A fluorene compound represented by general formula (1) wherein at least either of A<SB>1</SB>and A<SB>2</SB>represents a carbazole ring, namely a fluorene compound having a partial structure constituted of a fluorene ring bonded to the 2-position of a carbazole ring is disclosed. An organic EL element comprising the fluorene compound, particularly an organic EL element comprising the fluorene compound employed as a host compound of its light emitting layer is an excellent element which not only emits light highly efficiently but also keeps high luminance for a long time.
