Acrylonitrile polymers containing at least 80 per cent of acrylonitrile are dissolved in an organic solvent for the polymer such as N,N-dimethyl formamide, N,N-dimethyl acetamide or sulpholane, to provide a solution containing at least 5 per cent of polymeric material, the solution containing from 0.1 to 5 per cent based on the weight of the organic solvent of hydroxylamine hydrochloride, dimethylamine hydrochloride, phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, or aniline sulphate. Copolymers of acrylonitrile specified are those containing up to 20 per cent of one or more copolymerizable monomers such as acrylic, methacrylic, and haloacrylic acids, methyl, butyl, octyl, methoxymethyl, and chlorethyl acrylates, methacrylates, and alpha-chloracrylates, methacrylonitrile, vinyl fluoride and chloride, vinylidene fluoride and chloride, 1-fluoro-1-chloroethylene, vinyl acetate, chloracetate, propionate, and stearate, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, N-vinylphthalimide, N - vinylsuccinimide, N - vinylbutyrolactam, N - vinylcaprolactam, 2 - vinylpyridine, vinylpyrazines, N - allylformamide, N - methallyl - formamide, N - ethallylformamide, N - vinyl - N - methylformamide, allyl urea, and N - allyl-sulphonamides. The solution may also contain other polymeric materials such as a dye receptive copolymer of acrylonitrile and a vinyl substituted heterocyclic tertiary amine. The solutions may be used for forming films, fibres, sheets, casings, tubings and rods. In an example a dimethylacetamide solution of a blend of acrylonitrile copolymers containing hydroxylamine hydrochloride is spun into a mixture of water and dimethylacetamide containing 60 per cent of the latter, maintained at 50 DEG C., the fibres then being withdrawn from the coagulating bath and dried and stretched. |
