A method for controlling a defrosting operation in a heat pump type air conditioner is provided to prevent freezing and unnecessary defrosting operation by classifying outdoor temperature as high, mid, low zones and differentiating the defrosting operation starting temperature for each zone. A method for controlling a defrosting operation for a heat exchanger in an outdoor unit of a heat pump type air conditioner, the method comprises the steps of: detecting operation time of a compressor which compresses refrigerant; measuring a temperature of the heat exchanger; and measuring an ambient temperature around the outdoor unit. The outdoor temperature is classified as high-temperature, mid-temperature, and low-temperature zones for performing the defrosting operation, wherein each zone has different defrosting operation starting temperature depending on the operation time of compressor, temperature of heat exchanger, and outdoor temperature.
