A display device and a method for controlling the same are provided to adjust the brightness of an image, determine whether the brightness is within a reference range, and readjust whether the brightness is not in the reference range. A display device includes a display module(10), an estimation module(20), a brightness adjusting module(30) and a controller(40). The display module(10) displays an image. The estimation module(20) estimates the brightness of an image. The controller(40) adjusts the brightness of the image such that the brightness is within a reference range, determines whether the brightness belongs to the reference range, and readjusts the brightness of the image if the brightness is not within the reference range.
