A process for the production of phenolic compounds such as phenol by decarboxylation of aryl monocarboxy compounds, such as benzoic acid, in the presence of a copper salt which is soluble in the reaction medium, oxygen and water is characterized in that the build-up of tar or tarry products in the reaction zone is prevented by treating a withdrawn portion of the reaction mixture with superheated water, separating the tar and returning the aqueous extract thus obtained with or without subsequent removal of any part of all of the water from the extract, to the reaction zone. The process may be operated continuously. The examples relate to the preparation of phenol from benzoic acid in the presence of copper benzoate and magnesium oxide. The process may be applied to benzoic acids substituted with alkyl, phenyl, chloro, bromo and nitro radicals to obtain the corresponding phenols.
