X : -CH= or N; n : 0-12; R 1COOM or SO 3M; either R 2OH or 1-4C alkyl; R 3H or 1-4C alkyl; or R 2, R 35-6 membered, preferably 6 membered ring (optionally substituted by COOM); and M : H or mineral cations i.e. alkaline and/or alkaline earth metal cations ensuring electroneutrality of (I). Independent claims are included for: (1) a tinctorial composition for the coloring of human keratinous fibers, comprising (I) and a direct dye and/or an oxidation dye, in a medium; and (2) a process coloring of keratinous fibers, comprising applying the tinctorial composition optionally in combination with a simultaneous of successive application of an oxidizing composition comprising an oxidant on the keratinous fibers, leaving for some time to obtain a desired effect, optionally rinsing the fibers and shampooing and rinsing the fibers, followed by drying or leaving to dry. #CMT#[Image]#/CMT# #CMT#USE : #/CMT# (I) is useful in a coloring process of keratinous fibers (claimed) i.e. in hair coloring. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# (I) provides cosmetic compositions with good coloring potency, homogeneity and selectivity, increased solubility. #CMT#ORGANIC CHEMISTRY : #/CMT# Preferred Components: Preferred Components: (I) is present in the composition at 0.5-50 wt.%, preferably 1-15 wt.%. The direct dye is (non)ionic direct dyes such as nitro benzene dyes, azoic dyes, azomethinic dyes, methinic dyes, tetraazapenthamethinic dyes, anthraquinonic dyes, naphthoquinonic dyes, benzoquinonic dyes, indigoid phenotiazinic dyes, xanthenic dyes, phenanthridinic dyes, phthalocyanins, triarylmethane dervatives and/or natural dyes. The direct dye is present at 0.001-20 wt.% of the composition. The oxidation dye is oxidation bases and/or couplers. The oxidation base is o-phenylenediamines, p-phenylenediamines, double bases, o-aminophenols, p-aminophenols and/or heterocyclic bases, or their acid addition salts. The oxidation base and the coupler are present at 0.001-10 wt.% of the composition, individually. The coupler is m-aminophenols, m-phenylenediamines, m-diphenols, naphthols and/or heterocyclic couplers, or their acid addition salts. #CMT#PHARMACEUTICALS : #/CMT# Preferred Components: The composition comprises water at >=40 wt.%. The composition comprises a surfactant and/or a polymer. Preferred Method: The coloring process comprises preparation of a ready-to-use composition by mixing a composition comprising a direct dye and/or an oxidation dye in a medium with a composition comprising an oxidizing agent, where (I) is present in either one or both of the compositions. #CMT#SPECIFIC COMPOUNDS : #/CMT# The use of 8 compounds (I) is specifically claimed e.g. phenyl acetic acid of formula (Ia), ethyl-4-benzenesulfonic acid, hydroxy-4 benzenesulfonic acid, phenyl-4 butyric acid, picolinic acid and/or naphthalene-1 sulfonic acid.</p>
