A method for preparing an ester compound is provided to solve the problems of browning and deterioration of a target product caused by the use of a conventional base catalyst, and to obtain an ester useful as a lubricant base having excellent oxidation stability and quality. A method for preparing an ester compound comprises the steps of: reacting an alcohol with a carboxylic acid in the presence of 0.00001-0.005 mol of a Lewis acid catalyst and 0.0003-0.005 mol of a phosphorus-containing reducing agent based on 1 mol of carboxyl groups in the carboxylic acid; and isolating the resultant ester product, wherein the phosphorus-containing reducing agent is at least one selected from the group consisting of phosphorus acid, hypophosphorous acid and salts thereof.
