The method involves decomposing an image (I) into deformation data defining the deformation of the image and texture data defining a texture of the image, in a determined representation base. The deformation data is quantized for forming quantized deformation data and reference deformation data. The texture data is quantized based on the function of reference deformation data for forming quantized reference data. A signal (S) representative of the image is defined, where the image includes quantized deformation data and quantized texture data.
