PHARMAZEUTISCH AKTIVE KAROTENOIDE

摘要

The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are used either separately or in combination to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The carotenoids are administered in the form of a pharmaceutical preparation, e.g. a capsule or alternatively as a food e.g. a genetically engineered tomato producing enhanced levels of carotenoid. High dosages of lutein and zeaxanthin are needed to ensure high serum levels necessary for take up of the carotenoids by the macula.
