<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an approach detecting device capable of judging the contact or the approach of user's eye at a fixed distance regardless of the change of circumstances. <P>SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus is equipped with an eye approach detection means 11 having a light projection means 11a for projecting light to an object to which light is projected 11h, and a light receiving means 11d for receiving reflected light from the object to which the light is projected 11h, and detecting the approach of an eye based on output from the light receiving means 11d. The eye approach detection means 11 detects the approach of an eye when output from the light receiving means 11d is equal to or above a predetermined value, and sets the projected light quantity 11f of the light projection means 11a so that it may be equal to or above the predetermined value.
