PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the lowering of the measuring accuracy by eliminating an erroneous detection when detecting a cutting edge by a laser light type measuring means and measuring a tool. SOLUTION: This tool measuring instrument of the machine tool moves the cutting edge Ta of the tool T installed on a main spindle of a machine tool close to a laser light irradiated from a light projector E to an optical receiver F, detects the coordinate values of the main spindle to the coordinate origin of the machine tool when the amount of received laser light, which is detected by the optical receiver when the cutting edge blocks the laser light, becomes a prescribed threshold or less, and measures the tool length or the tool diameter; and can vary the diameter of the laser light. A shutter piston 43 provided in a casing 31 of the projector is formed with a plurality of through-holes 44a and 44b with different diameters along the moving direction, and the diameter of the laser light may be changed by stopping the shutter piston at respective positions where the respective through-holes are aligned with the laser light.
