<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composition and a method for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction, more particularly a method and pharmacological composition for the administration of a vasodilating agent to the fossa navicularis of the patient. <P>SOLUTION: The invention provides a method for the treatment of erectile dysfunction comprising a step to place an effective erection-inducing amount of a prostaglandin E<SB>1</SB>composition of a semi-solid consistency in the fossa navicularis of a patient. The composition contains prostaglandin E<SB>1</SB>, a penetration enhancer, a polysaccharide gum, a lipophilic compound and an acidic buffer system. The penetration enhancer is an alkyl-2-(N,N-disubstituted amino)-alkanoate ester, an (N,N-disubstituted amino)alkanol alkanoate or their mixture, and the lipophilic compound may be an aliphatic 1-8C alcohol, an aliphatic 2-30C ester, an aliphatic 8-30C ester or their mixture.
