Steel resulting from conventional furnace or converter processes and having a carbon content of 0.03-0.12%, or appropriately more if an oxidizing agent is deliberately added, is tapped in the unkilled state and is subjected to vacuum treatment during or immediately after tapping, the vacuum being so controlled that the final carbon content of the steel is below 0.025%. Alloying additions such as nickel, cobalt and molybdenum, which do not influence decarburization, may be added to the steel at any time, while those such as aluminium and silicon are added after the vacuum treatment. Suitable apparatus for the process is that described in Specificatin 1,011,056.
|
