A portable terminal and an event handling method thereof are provided to change a position of the terminal so as to conduct easily mode conversion, and to handle an event occurring in a mode equivalent to a confirmed position of the terminal by confirming the position of the terminal if the event occurs. A storage(110) stores the first position set to handle an event as a mute sound. If event occurrence is sensed, a position detector(130) confirms a position of a portable terminal(100) for predetermined time. If the confirmed position is maintained as the first position for the predetermined time, a controller(140) changes an operation mode into a mute mode to handle the occurring event.
