By measuring the expression of a specific gene in any of the blood, a hepatic cancer cell and a hepatic cancer tissue, it is possible to identify the hepatic cancer, determine the disease stage or estimate the prognosis. A method of identifying hepatic cancer, determining the disease stage or estimating the prognosis which comprises measuring the expression of a specific gene in any of the blood, a hepatic cancer cell and a hepatic cancer tissue, wherein the expression of the specific gene differs between the SP fraction and the Non-SP fraction of a hepatic cancer cell. It is also intended to provide a kit for identifying hepatic cancer, determining the disease stage or estimating the prognosis, a method of detecting a hepatic cancer stem cell, a method of distinguishing a hepatic caner stem cell from a hepatic cancer non-stem cell, a hepatic cancer stem cell and a method of preparing the same.
