A method for preparing xylylene diamine is provided to obtain high-quality xylylene diamine having a low content of cyanobenzyl amine and useful as a resin curing agent or intermediate for polyamide and isocyanate with a high yield. A method for preparing xylylene diamine comprises the steps of: (1) subjecting a phthalonitrile compound and a mixed solution containing liquid ammonia alone or in combination with an organic solvent in an amount of at least 80 wt% to a first catalytic hydrogenation process to perform hydrogenation of the phthalonitrile compound and to obtain reaction product A; (2) removing liquid ammonia from reaction product A to obtain reaction product B; (3) subjecting reaction product B to a second catalytic hydrogenation process to perform hydrogenation of cyanobenzyl amine and to obtain reaction product C; and (4) carrying out distillation of reaction product C to purify xylylene diamine.
