PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for wasting no use-expired ink tank by setting up no limitations on a processing for improvement of a print quality or a print speed. SOLUTION: A printer having a plurality of ink tanks of the same color comprises: a means for supplying ink from the ink tanks of the same color to a print head for discharging the same color ink; a means for storing manufacturing date information in an NVRAM such as an EEPROM attached to the ink tanks; a means for acquiring the present date; a means for reading and comparing the manufacturing date information of the ink tanks of the same color; a means for comparing the present date with an old manufacturing date, as a result of the comparison; and a means for using, mainly for maintenance such as cleaning, ink of an ink tank judged to expire shortly as a result of the comparison.
