A recording device, a method thereof, a recording and reproducing device, and the method thereof are provided to improve user convenience when performing split editing of video data with a GOP(Group Of Picture) structure. A recording device comprises an encoder, a mark information generating unit, and a recording unit. The encoder compresses and encodes video data by intraframe compression based on a predict encode scheme for each group consisting of plural pictures including at least one independent decodable picture. The mark information generating unit generates mark information which indicates an access position of each group unit for the video data. The recording unit records the compressed and encoded video data in a recording medium. The mark information generating unit generates the mark information which indicates a lead position of a decodable group when setting the access position of one of the decodable groups without using information of the group prior to a reproducing order.
