PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object tracking method for detecting a movement position of an object even when the direction of the object to a photographing device is changed or when brightness of the background of the object is varied. SOLUTION: An object presence area is extracted from photograph data and a reference template is obtained. Based on the reference template, a plurality of comparison templates are generated. Using a plurality of comparison templates and new photograph data, template matching is carried out for tracking the object. In a comparison template generation step, a plurality of expansion/shrink templates are generated by scaling up/down the reference template by a plurality of magnifications, a plurality of rotation templates are generated by rotating the reference template and the like by predetermined angles respectively, and a plurality of distortion templates are generated by changing a ratio between a vertical dimension and a horizontal dimension and an inclination angle of the reference template and the like. A plurality of expansion/shrink templates, a plurality of rotation templates, and a plurality of distortion templates are used as a plurality of comparison templates. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
