In an organic EL element (1), at least two organic light emitting layers (30, 32, 34) are arranged between an anode (20) and a cathode (50), and at least one intermediate connecting layer (40, 42) is arranged between the organic light emitting layers (30, 32, 34). In the intermediate connecting layer (40, 42), an acceptor layer, a donor layer and an electron transport material layer including an aromatic ring-compound which is not a metallic complex are laminated in this order from the side of the cathode (50).
