PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high performance PBGF having a transmission band which is remarkably broader than that of a conventional PBGF. SOLUTION: A honeycomb grid type photonic band gap fiber has: a clad in which a plurality of unit cells are provided surrounding a core region, the unit cells are composed of a lot of cavities having a hexagonal cross section arranged in a quartz glass part along the longitudinal direction of a fiber, and the cavities surround a quartz glass rod region respectively interposing quartz glass walls; and a capillary core in which a plurality of cavities having a hexagonal cross section are arranged in a triangle, wherein honeycomb grid type photonic band gap fiber is characterized in that the unit cell has honeycomb grid constant ofΓ=√3Λ(whereΛstands for the distance between the centers of adjacent cavities), and fundamental vectors a<SB>1</SB>and a<SB>2</SB>expressing the periodicity of grids have angles 30°and -30°with respect to x-axis, respectively.
