PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize stable light control by nearly equalizing preheating currents of discharge lamps mounted, securing lamp life, and alleviating power loss, in a discharge lamp lighting device lighting/control lighting of discharge lamps with different rated powers, rated voltages or rated currents by high-frequency power. SOLUTION: In the discharge lamp lighting device provided with an inverter 3 equipped with at least one or more switching elements Q1, Q2 converting direct-current voltage into high frequencies and connected with a load circuit 4 capable of connecting discharge lamps La with different rated powers, rated voltages or rated currents through resonating circuits (L1, CfO) at its output terminal, and a light control part varying outputs of the inverter 3, a preheating current supply source preheating filaments of the discharge lamps La is structured of at least a first supply source (L2) which decreases a preheating current supply volume when an operating frequency of the inverter 3 is low, and a second supply source (CfO) which increases a preheating current supply volume when a discharge lamp voltage is high.
