PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing a desired 1,2-propanediol acetal derivative by few steps. SOLUTION: (1) The method for producing a compound of formula (1) [wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are independently H, a linear or branched chain 1-6C alkyl or phenyl, or R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are combined to be a 4-7C methylene; and R<SP>3</SP>is H or methyl] comprises acetalization of a 3-halogeno-1,2-propanediol compound in the presence of an acid catalyst, azidation and catalytic hydrogenation. (2) The method for producing a compound of formula (6) [wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are same as those mentioned above] comprises acetalization of a 3-halogeno-2-methyl-1,2-propanediol in the presence of an acid catalyst, and, reaction with a metal carboxylate and deacylation, or reaction with an alkoxide and catalytic hydrogenation.
