Preparing alkyl-aromatic compounds comprises reacting aromatic compound with 1-14C-alkane in the presence of a heterogenous catalyst, which is crystalline, micro- and/or mesoporous solid containing silicon, and the catalytic active metal contains platinum and at least a element such as lanthanum, gold or zinc, where the catalyst is activated by reductive pretreatment. An independent claim is included for a method for preparing alkyl aryl sulfonate comprising preparing the alkyl aromatic compound by the above method and subsequently sulfonating and neutralizing the alkyl aromatic compound.
