The lighting unit (12) has a light source (1) to generate a light beam, with the lighting unit having a tilted mirror (7) to redirect the light rays passing to an object field (6) of a microscope (11). The mirror is a micro-mirror array (7') having individually controllable and adjustable micro-mirrors. The micro level of the micro-mirror arrays is controllable so that the illumination beam in the object field (6) produces a luminous field of a given geometry. The luminous field geometry varies over time. An independent claim is included for a microscope.
