Apparatus for continuously preparing in granular form synthetic plastics and the like comprises a horizontal tubular container with rotatable axial shaft carrying mixing tools having the general form of swash-plates or wobble-spiders. As shown, each swash-plate is divided into three segments, the two segments 5 being arranged forwardly of the normal to the shaft and tending to sweep the material forward, and the third segment 7 being arranged behind the normal and tending to sweep material backwards, the forward effect being dominant. The material is thus given reciprocating and rotary motions. The blades may be fixedly attached to the shaft or detachably by bayonet couplings and there are internal baffles (not depicted) in the container adjustable from outside it. The peripheral speed of the mixing tools is 7-9 m./sec. All the mixing tools have the same inclination to the shaft but some may be in different planes as at 6. The materials are introduced at 9 while an additive may be introduced at 11 and pass along the hollow shaft 2 to an aperture 12 preferably arranged in the first fifth of the mixing system, where it is thrown out by centrifugal force. The apparatus may be pivoted at 13 so that it may be inclined to assist the passage of materials. It may be externally heated or cooled. The outlet aperture may be adjusted by a flap valve controlled mechanically, magnetically, electrically, pneumatically, or hydraulically by the motor or by a governor in dependence on the power absorbed by the motor to maintain the consistency of the mixture constant.</p> |
