PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrode for a discharge lamp capable of suppressing depletion of an emitter in lighting a discharge lamp, and of improving bonding force between the emitter and the electrode. SOLUTION: This electrode for a discharge lamp is coated with the emitter 5, and is characterized in that the emitter 5 contains, as a first emitter constituent 5a, at least one kind of oxide represented by a composition formula AO, wherein A in the composition formula is any element selected from Ca, Sr and Ba; the emitter also contains, as a second emitter constituent 5b, at least one kind selected from a metal M and a metal oxide M<SB>x</SB>O<SB>y</SB>, wherein M is any element selected from Ca, Sr, Ba, Al, Mg and a transition metal element, (x) and (y) are each an integer; and, when it is assumed that the average particle diameter of the first emitter constituent 5a and the average particle diameter of the second emitter constituent 5b are (a) and (b), respectively, the emitter has a relationship of a/b>3.
