PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent malfunctions: recording media are wasted because thin spots appear during printing and the printing is finally stopped, in the case where a printer runs out of ink before the number of printed sheets reaches the number of sheets to be printed, set by a user, midway through printing operations, when the user performs the printing in large quantities; and the printing is stopped before the stop of the printing is noticed by the user having been away from the printer because the printing is performed in large quantities. SOLUTION: A recorder mainframe has a means for computing the number of the sheets capable of being printed with a present quantity of remaining ink, for a printing mode set in the recorder mainframe by the user. The computed number of the printable sheets is compared with the set number of the sheets to be printed, set by the user. When the number of the printable sheets is smaller than the set number of the sheets to be printed, that effect is presented by a display device which is added to the recorder, so that the user can select the continuation of the printing or a change in the setting of the printing at the initial stage of the printing.
