PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively reduce emission by performing internal EGR and external EGR at an optimal ratio under stable operation condition and surely avoid an adverse effect of EGR at the time of load change, in a control device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When increase of engine load is estimated, ratio of internal EGR quantity to total EGR quantity is set higher right before the increase (time t1 to t2). Consequently, when engine load actually increases, total EGR rate can be immediately reduced by changing valve timing of an intake and an exhaust valve. Emission of smoke, thereby, can be effectively inhibited since shortage of oxygen in a cylinder right after increase of engine load can be avoided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
