PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure suitable fuel consumption by setting an expansion ratio of 20 or more. SOLUTION: The spark ignition internal combustion engine is provided with a variable compression ratio mechanism A capable of varying a mechanical compression ratio, and an actual compression action start timing changing mechanism B capable of changing start timing of actual compression action. The mechanical compression ratio is made to be maximum so that the expansion ratio is 20 or more when the engine is operated under a low load, and the actual compression ratio when the engine is operated under the low load is almost equal to the actual compression ratio when the engine is operated under a high load.
